The story of Janos Hunyadi is the epic tale of a hero born into modest circumstances, who, in 1456, with relentless determination and against all odds, vanquished the much larger Ottoman army, halting its drive to conquer the Vatican and overrun Western Europe. In so doing, Hunyadi not only shaped the history of Hungary, but that of all Europe.
This 10-episode mini-series is based on the novels of historical fiction written by Mór Bán, which have been best sellers in Hungary since the first volume was published over ten years ago. These books provide rich and unique insight into the dramatic conflicts of 15th Century Central Europe and the Ottoman Empire.
Intended for a worldwide audience, this series will follow the life of Hunyadi from his childhood as the son of a lowly court knight and early years as a reckless daredevil soldier, to his mercenary years in Milan and his steady rise to becoming a powerful warlord and the Governor of Hungary. With a visually striking contemporary approach, the series will chronicle his lifelong struggle against the ever-expanding Ottoman Empire as well as his enemies at home. It all culminates in Hunyadi’s climactic victory against seemingly insurmountable odds when he defeats the invading Ottoman army at the siege of Nandorfehervar (contemporary Belgrade), a triumph that forever altered the history of Europe.
The series will be produced by Robert Lantos of Serendipity Point Films in partnership with Beta Film and the National Film Institute of Hungary. The series will be directed by Academy-Award Nominated director Robert Dornhelm, Orsi Nagypál and Attila Szász, the showrunner of the production is Balázs Lengyel.
